Gears Traditions | Pitching Traditions | Baserunning Principles

PRE-GAME

  1. All base runners should check the strength of opponents’ arms during pre-game. Be aware of any habits they may have.
  2. Watch the infielders.
    1. SS & 2B habits on double plays – always same side?
    2. 1B throws to 2B – always same side?
    3. Catcher throwing out in front of plate?
    4. Good Relays to the Plate? Hit the Cutoffs?

DURING THE GAME

  1. Study the pitcher for patterns – "One Looker"
  2. There is no such thing as an automatic out. Go full speed in every situation.
  3. The on-deck hitter is responsible for signaling the scoring baserunner. Give both hand and verbal signals to slide or stand up.

GENERAL

  1. The key to successful baserunning is to THINK AHEAD – ANTICIPATE (Score, Pitcher, Outs, Arms)
Remember that every single is a double, and every double is a triple until the defense proves otherwise. A single is stretched into a double between home and first, not first and second.
