Gears Traditions | Pitching Traditions | Baserunning Principles
PRE-GAME
- All base runners should check the strength of opponents’ arms during pre-game. Be aware of any habits they may have.
- Watch the infielders.
- SS & 2B habits on double plays – always same side?
- 1B throws to 2B – always same side?
- Catcher throwing out in front of plate?
- Good Relays to the Plate? Hit the Cutoffs?
DURING THE GAME
- Study the pitcher for patterns – "One Looker"
- There is no such thing as an automatic out. Go full speed in every situation.
- The on-deck hitter is responsible for signaling the scoring baserunner. Give both hand and verbal signals to slide or stand up.
GENERAL
- The key to successful baserunning is to THINK AHEAD – ANTICIPATE (Score, Pitcher, Outs, Arms)
Remember that every single is a double, and every double is a triple until the defense proves otherwise. A single is stretched into a double between home and first, not first and second.
